Cerebral avant-electro. Top ten likely to remain untroubled.
Following Oversteps, Move Of Ten is the second release this year by veteran avant electro duo Autechre, and long term fans will know precisely what to expect – tunes that go sqonk-blarp-hiss, and track titles consisting of consonants heaped together, apparently at random. But, it’s hard not to be enamoured of Sean Booth and Rob Brown’s bloody-mindedness, and their sonic experimentations have again yielded some pretty impressive results.
At times, the duo even refrain from their sonic brinksmanship long enough to let a groove develop, and – believe it or not! – you might even find your foot tapping. Of course, there are still plenty of cut-to-fuck beats and pain threshold experiments in electro brutality (you know, for the fans) but Move Of Ten does contain some of the group’s most accessible music to date.
So perhaps we can look forward to that rendition of ‘nth Dafuseder.b’ on X-Factor. Then again, maybe not.
