Many high profile musicians and public figures had backed the Remain campaign.
The UK has voted to leave the European Union. The Leave campaign came out on top at 52% compared to the Remain campaign's 48%. Meanwhile, Northern Ireland and Scotland voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU at 62% and 55.7% respectively.
The Foyle constituency in Derry had the fourth highest remain vote in the UK at 78%. However, that was to no avail, with almost all of England and Wales voting to Leave. The only other major exception to the general drift was the capital city of London, which came out at 59.9% for Remain.
The extent to which the result is mud in the eye for young British people is one of the stories of the campaign.
A YouGov poll has estimated that 75% of voters in the age group 18 - 24 voted Remain while just 44% of 50 - 64 years olds and 39% of 65 and over did the same. Prime Minister David Cameron has announced his resignation and will step down in October.
The result was confirmed early this morning and reactions have flooded social media since. #Brexit is dominating Twitter. Musicians and other public figures have been giving their verdict on the historic result. One Direction's Niall Horan, Liam Gallagher, Johnny Marr, James Bay, J.K. Rowling and more have expressed their opinions – all emphasising their bewilderment and unhappiness at the decision.
Blur's Damon Albarn has also said "democracy has failed us" while performing with The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians this morning at Glastonbury.

No one ever said that the majority know what they're doing. All the more reason for the rest of us to stick together.

It's a sad day . The economic impact that this is going to have is definitely going to make those voters regret their decision
