The Coronas' Danny O'Reilly talks Hot Press through the highs and lows of 2022...
Your Hero of 2022?
Mary Black, who stole the show during our Electric Picnic set. She also just won a lifetime achievement award and cooks a mean lasagne. Hopefully she’ll read this and forgive me for being on tour when she got her big award.
Villain of 2022?
Vladimir Putin, he’s not the soundest.
Best Personal Moment?
Thankfully, the band had a few great moments this year. I feel like we deserved a bit of good fortune after all that coronavirus stuff. We’re back touring, we released an album we’re really proud of and, of course, we got to grace the cover of Hot Press again. Personally though, it was a goal I scored in the semi-final of the cup for my over-35s soccer team (disclaimer: I am one of the youngest on said over-35s soccer team).
Best Movie or TV show?
Loved Banshees Of Inisherin and The Batman (was that 2022?). I also loved Bad Sisters and House Of The Dragon.
Best record?
Gang Of Youths’ Angel In Realtime. I’ve been obsessed with this Aussie band for a couple of years, but I’m still yet to see them live. Also love Ye Vagabonds’ Nine Waves.

Best book?
Bono – Surrender. Been really enjoying this while we’re on the road. U2’s early years were before my time, but Bono has such a lovely way with words. And even though U2 are a million times bigger and better than The Coronas ever will be, there’s lots of parts of it that really resonate with me.
Best thing you saw online?
Wordle – I was late to the party but it’s great.
Your hope for next year?
That the war ends peacefully forever, actually all wars. And that maybe we could sort out the housing crisis in Ireland. And climate change in the world. That’s not too much to ask for is it?
What tickled your funnybone?
Trains, Planes & Automobiles. We just watched it on the tourbus and it’s still as good as ever. It’s hilarious but also has heart and tenderness, like most of John Hughes’ work. John Candy is a genius, as is Steve Martin. “I want a focking car, four focking wheels and a focking engine!”
