Alien-pop’ duo deliver quirky, enjoyable debut
There are quite a few synth-pop revivalists out there, all making a similar kind of noise. Although electronic duo Nanu Nanu may be relatively fresh on the scene, having formed just over a year ago, they have earned a growing reputation as one of the most exciting live acts on the scene here.
You would expect, then, that debut album Unit 1 would kick off with the same sort of velocity that Glitterface (Laura Sheeran) and Mirrorman (Marc Aubele) are known for as live performers. Intriguingly, however, this foray starts out with more of a whisper than a roar. Opener ‘Baby Bug’, juggles between the soft and the sharp, before building towards a pumped-up finish.
In truth, much of Unit 1 moves along in a similar pattern. It has foot-stampers like ‘Pocket Of Gold’, the band’s debut single, and the Prodigy-esque ‘Patron’, a tune you simply could not listen to standing still (you mean ‘stand still listening to?’ – Sub Ed).
However, chunky basslines and highly-charged digital melodies are not all Nanu Nanu have to offer. Glitterface shows off her entrancing vocal ability on softer numbers like latest single ‘The Gift’ and the wonderfully cool ‘Seahorse’. The lyrically-quirky ‘World War Zero’, contrary to it’s title, resonates with a real feelgood factor. It crowns an impressive full-length debut from the self-proclaimed patrons of ‘alien-pop’.
