Brazilian contraltos not being exactly ten a penny, Virginia Rodrigues' CD comes as a bit of a surprise. Nas is Rodrigues' second record, a gorgeous, sublime collection of songs from her native Brazil.

Rodrigues was discovered by Brazilian musical supremo Caetano Veloso only two years ago. Prior to that she used her magnificent vocal power for singing in church or at weddings. It would have been a travesty had she not been brought to a wider audience. Words like exalted and inspiring are conjured by her voice. Still not convinced? Then think Ibrahim Ferrer, think Compay Segundo. Velveteen voices backed by hip-swivelling percussion. There's a magnificent nobility here that's rarely matched by anything pop music has to offer.

'Mimar Voce' is a gorgeously orchestrated piece which, despite the linguistic barriers, whispers of lofty thoughts and spiritual redemption. 'Canto Para Exu' is pure Brazilian samba with voice and percussion illicitly coupled, while 'Uma Historia de Ifa' is a real standout with its riverrun of vocals and strings.

Music like that of Virginia Rodrigues is a rarity that renders our usual critical vocabulary redundant. This is music from the gods. Sup of its waters and replenish your spirit - daily.
