New artists on Hot Press's radar this fortnight...
“It’s about four mates having fun, and the energy that’s created from that,” Bobby & the Blunts’ Robbie Burzawa explains.
With Robbie on rhythm guitar, Ben Mulligan on lead guitar, Robert Arnold on bass and Stephen Shanley on drums, the self-described “punk-funk” group have an impressive knack for creating an energetic atmosphere. Since forming in 2017, their live talents have been seen at the likes of Electric Picnic and Theatre Royal Waterford.
“The hardest part for us is trying to capture the energy on records, because if you ever see us live, you’ll see that it’s just constantly energetic, even with the slow songs”, Robbie says.
While their EP, One for the Boys contains a few vocal tracks, Robbie states that the band feel most comfortable “jamming out” instrumentally: “It’s just the most natural thing that comes to us. It’s more fun to express yourself through instruments than through lyrics.”

The next record is already in the works, and Bobby & the Blunts are aiming high. “It’s more of a concept album, which is based around a video. Of course, from now until then, it could always transform into something else.”
Bobby & the Blunts play Upstairs at Whelan’s on July 28.
