A quick interview with an up-and-coming artist on Hot Press' radar.
Sia Babez always knew that she wanted to be a singer, and started her career as early as a – yes! – two-years-old! “My mum took me to the shops one day and I just started singing a Dido song,” she recalls. “I’ve been singing every day since.” At age 10 – after entering drama school – she started writing her own songs about life and the way other people have made her feel. “I went through bullying all through primary and secondary school, so I put that in my songs. It’s a big issue that not many people are talking about in their music.”
It’s clearly an important topic for the singer, who could also be defined as an Instagram star. She describes the rise of social media as a blessing and a curse at the same time: “If you do your thing then you can get past that negativity and the hate. Because after all, the people behind the screens can’t really do anything to you.”

Babez boasts an eclectic musical style that mixes R&B and pop, with her Zimbabwean roots also an influence. She enjoyed a major coup recently, having been approached by world-famous producer Amadeus, who has worked with the likes of Chris Brown, Jennifer Lopez and Justin Bieber. “He just gave me the go-ahead to confirm this,” she says excitedly. It should be another invaluable step on the road to the top.
