In our recent issue, Hot Press spoke to the Indie Folk Rock band who formed in late 2016.
Indie-folk rockers Blue Fish Diamond have just released their excellent debut album, From Dark To Light. Forming in late 2016, the band have played key Dublin venues such as Whelans, Sin é, The Underground and the Workmans.
They also recently played a set at Electric Picnic on the 2FM Play Picnic stage, which singer and chief songwriter Jim Murphy regards as the highlight of their career to date. The seven-piece met at music school BIMM, and following their debut gig in Whelans, felt they had strong chemistry.
"It wasn't the biggest gig in the world," notes Murphy, "but it made us feel like we could achieve things." Filling out the group are Axel McDonald, Matilda O'Mahony, Ella Ryan and Laura Ryder - all of whom have projects outside the band - as well as Shay Sweeney and Ronan Quinn. They have released a trio of singles this year, 'Hey Hey', 'Salvation Call' and 'Time To Go'. All of the tunes showcase a folk sensibility influenced by the likes of Neil Young and REM - but with a distinctively Irish twist.
What can people expect from Blue Fish Diamond's debut?

"The singles give a good indication," says Jim. "'Hey Hey' has an REM or Byrds type of vibe, while 'Time To Go' is almost like Tom Petty. And then you have 'Salvation Call', which is a real mellow and soft tune."
Exploring themes like life, death, relationships and regret, the LP is essential listening for those who like their music powerful and heartfelt.
