Leaving a full-time job is not something that many young people in Ireland would consider doing right now. But Dublin-based singer-songwriter Vicky Sergeant chose to do exactly that, in order to pursue music full-time.
“I’ve always been singing and playing music,” reflects Sergeant, “but it was only recently that I began to take it seriously and focus on making my dream a reality.”
Having graduated from UCD and experienced uncertainty about what direction to take professionally, Sergeant eventually opted for a job in digital marketing. However, as she continued to work with vocal coach Timara Galassi – who has been training Sergeant since college – the singer realised where her true ambitions really lay.
“It came to a point where I really felt that I needed to give music my full focus,” notes Sergeant. “So that’s what I did. It was a brave move. but probably the best one I’ve ever made. For me, it’s really important that I do something I’m passionate about.”
Released last September, Sergeant’s debut EP Beyond The Beginning layers her classical singing style over an exquisite mix of piano, guitar and strings. The record showcases her seductive vocals to perfection, ranging from gentle melancholy to stirring joyousness. Musically, Beyond The Beginning is impressively eclectic as well, veering from catchy pop (‘Cry’) to more avant-garde fare (‘Let Go’).
Sergeant has spent the last few months planning for her next project, and she is eagerly looking forward to experimenting with other genres such as jazz.

“The melodies usually come first and the lyrics after,” she explains. “The melodies for the next EP are moodier – it’s been an amazing journey, but it’s been really tough also. I think I’ve learnt a lot about myself, and I’ve matured musically and personally. I’d love to tour around and gig more too. Fingers crossed.
Beyond The Beginning is out now. Vicky Sergeant plays at The Wiley Fox, Dublin on March 26.
