Rogue’s songs are a non-stop party, complete with unstoppable vocals from electrifying duo Joe and Sadhbh. But if you listen to some of the lyrics, there’s a deeper message – ‘Drowning’, for example, is a funky number that focuses on global warming.
“I was reading so many articles about it that it just got in my head,” says Joe, ROGUE’s lyricist. “It’s not taken seriously enough, especially with people our age. It’s nice to be able to put that into words. But we don’t get too political at all; I don’t want to get too preachy.”
“If we can be the one band that doesn’t mention Donald Trump in a song, I think we’re doing pretty well,” says Sadhbh.
The more political elements are balanced out with songs that are pure fun, such as live favourite ‘Like Pornstars Do’. In terms of their background, the group first came together during their student days at BIMM.
“From there we started auditioning new people,” recalls Joe. “Sadhbh was there from the beginning.”
“He asked me to sing on the recordings,” Sadhbh picks up, “and then they convinced me to gig with them. I’m still here, and I’m loving it. That’s the thing; I wasn’t too keen on playing onstage, but the songs are too good. You just have to sing them.”
At the time we’re catching up with the ROGUE kids, they’re setting off on a tour opening up for The Felonies. As they move onwards and upwards, who could they see themselves supporting in the future?
“I feel like we’ve got a couple that would be good at a Red Hot Chili Peppers gig,” muses drummer Wally.
“we could open for so many different people with just one song each,” says Sadhbh. “Like we could use our new one ‘Sober’ with Led Zeppelin, but then we’ve got others that have more of a funk vibe.”
