In the age of the internet, you can find pretty much anything online – new roommates, new boyfriends, and even new band members, according to Vulpynes lead singer Maeve.
“We started playing together about a year-and-a-half ago, and at that point, I was actually planning on going solo. But then I was like, I really do want to be in a band. So I went on boards.ie, looking for potential bandmates, and I saw Kaz’s ad.”
As the singer notes, the connection was instant.
“She’s the drummer, and she was looking for a singer,” explains Maeve. “I really liked the sound of her ad, she mentioned some bands that I was really into, like Hole and Alice in Chains – the ’90s classics. We started messaging back and forth and just clicked. It’s funny, I said to her, I feel like I’m writing back to a dating ad. It’s like, tell me about yourself, what are your influences, would you like to go get coffee, you know? And then we added each other on Facebook, and you’re going, ‘Oh, so that’s what you look like!’”
With only Maeve and Kaz as members, Vulpynes still make plenty of noise as a two-piece. Their songs are intense and gritty, with single ‘OCD’ also boasting some witty wordplay. “Lyrics come very easily to me, actually,” Maeve notes. “‘OCD’ was a tongue-in-cheek take on using your compulsions to your advantage, in terms of double-checking everything and so on. It’s definitely therapeutic for me to take something like that and put it into a song.”
See: Vulpynes at the Dublin Quays Festival at Sin-É on August 17.
