Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello, who was criticised for allowing the pop star to film her music video in his church, has been fired for mismanaging church funds
The leader of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Brooklyn - where Sabrina Carpenter filmed the music video for 'Feather' - has been sacked.
The diocese says that it was "appalled" with Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello's allowance of the video shoot and launched an investigation following the incident, subsequently revealing an alleged mismanagement of funds and administrative impropriety.
The priest is accused of having $1.9m (€1.8m) in parish funds transferred to bank accounts affiliated with Frank Carone, the former chief of staff of New York City mayor Eric Adams, who is being investigated on corruption charges. Adams was arrested earlier this year under charges of conspiracy, wire fraud and bribery that includes letting Turkish officials and businesses contribute illegal campaign contributions and lavish overseas trips to the mayor.
In the video for 'Feather', Carpenter can be seen riding in front of the church in the Williamsburg neighbourhood in a pink hearse, as well as dancing in a black veil inside the church. Gigantiello said he permitted the video to “strengthen the bonds between the young creative artists who make up a large part of this community and the parish.”
In an interview with Variety Carpenter said that: "We got approval in advance, and Jesus was a carpenter.”
