The disgraced billionaire had been on suicide watch following a previous attempt to take his own life
The breaking news from New York is that Jeffrey Epstein has died by suicide in his Manhattan prison cell.
"A gurney carrying a man who looked like Epstein was wheeled out of the Manhattan Correctional Center around 7:30 a.m. and headed to New York Downtown Hospital," reports the New York Post. "A call for a reported cardiac arrest came in at 6:38 a.m., Fire Department sources said."
Questions are already being asked as to how this could have occurred with the 66-year-old on around the clock suicide watch.
There's been plenty of reaction locally with Amnesty Ireland's Colm O'Gorman describing Epstein's actions as: "The ultimate refusal to face taking responsibility for his crimes. A very difficult day for all his victims. This will hurt a lot, as I know from personal experience. I remember being devastated, for my family, my dad, myself, his other victims, their families, the families of boys who had themselves ended their own lives because of what the did to them - and for his family. Even for him. This was no proper ending - no closure.
"I had battles still to fight though – the church needed to be held accountable for its central role in what happened to me. So I pursued that and I got justice. I was lucky. So many are not. So many are left in a nowhere place - as alleged victims. With no closure. It’s awful."
Adds broadcaster Maia Dunphy: "The breaking news is fundamentally depressing for his victims and all too convenient for the many high profile perverts connected to him. I'm rarely one for conspiracy theories but what kind of magician does one have to be to take one's own life on suicide watch?"
