Following the release of her debut album, Yellow Roses, last Friday via Claddagh Records, Dublin singer-songwriter Niamh Bury has shared her reflections on the creation of the video for the project's final single, 'Bite The Bridle'
The video was directed and produced by renowned filmmaker and musician Myles O'Reilly – who, through his online music showcase, This Ain't No Disco, has famously captured performances from some of the most influential forces in the contemporary Irish folk community.
Describing Myles as her "genius friend" in a social media post, Niamh notes that the pair "laughed [their] way through most" of the music video's creation.
"We made the majority of it two years ago, and in telling the sad horse story it also gives a lovely snapshot of my home city of Dublin," she writes.
"Myles was a very early encourager of my music, so it feels like a full circle moment that he should play a big part in the final single on Yellow Roses," she continues. "I’ve been a fan of his film work for probably about 15 years and am now a big fan of his music too!"
'Bite The Bridle' was originally inspired by an encounter Niamh had with a horse in Temple Bar.
“It was a hot summer evening, and the driver had just loaded six large men into her carriage,” Niamh reflects. “She wouldn’t budge, but started to stomp her hooves on the cobblestones, as sparks started to fly. The driver simply remarked, ‘She’s not happy about something’. It made me think of the ways we ignore the needs of ourselves and other beings just to keep the cogs turning. There comes a point when the bridle must be broken and we run for the hills.”
Yellow Roses scored a worthy 9.5-star review in the current issue of Hot Press.
"A collection of finely-wrought songs that feel like they have simply been aching to spring forth, it possesses the rare energy of a properly auspicious debut," Caroline Kelly wrote. Read the full review here.
Yellow Roses was produced, engineered and mixed by Brían Mac Gloinn of Ye Vagabonds, and was recorded in Black Mountain Studios in Co. Louth.
