While speaking of his New Year's resolution, the musician said that open mindedness is "unpopular on social media that trades primarily in a currency of performative moral outrage"
Nick Cave has shared his 2024 New Year’s Resolution for 2024 in a new post on his Red Hand File blog. Cave says his resolution aims to practice "more open-mindedness and understanding of other viewpoints".
In the post, the Australian musician answered two fan questions. The first one being a pretty straight forward "Could you point out three single words that you like the most and explain why?" asked by an Italian fan.
While a second question was asked by an Austrian fan who asked the musician if he had any New Year's Resolutions for 2024.
Cave's response combined the two questions, saying that: "Three of my favourite words, and ones I find myself using more and more these days, are ‘Having said that’.
I am also fond of saying ‘On the other hand’, and Seán O’Hagan [the frontman of Irish band The High Llamas] tells me that the word I use most in our book, Faith, Hope and Carnage, is ‘However’".
Cave then goes on to say that his New Year's resolution is "to practice, as best as I can, more open-mindedness and understanding of other viewpoints".

He says that these words which he cites as his favourites "acknowledge one point of view but also tender another" but that this "is something not much liked in our contemporary culture, it is unpopular on social media that trades primarily in a currency of performative moral outrage".
The musician maintains that the phrase "‘Having said that’ is the bothersome and deflating enemy of polarisation, self-righteousness, intolerance and hubris"
However citing the impact of social media on general discourse he says that "the world divides into its various factions", and that "these are words that are increasingly important".
The beloved musician concluded his response with well wishes for the New Year: "I wish both of you, and all readers of The Red Hand Files, the very best for 2024 and may happiness and good things come your way".
