'Wonderwall' hits the one-billion-streams landmark following the 25th anniversary of (What's The Story) Morning Glory?
Oasis' classic single 'Wonderwall' has become the first song from the 1990s to surpass one billion streams on Spotify. The achievement follows the 25th anniversary of (What's The Story) Morning Glory?, which featured 'Wonderwall' alongside hits like 'Don't Look Back in Anger' and 'Champagne Supernova'.
As well as being the first song from the '90s to gain entry to the exclusive one-billion-Spotify-streams club, 'Wonderwall' is also only the second song from before the year 2000 to hit the landmark – with Queen's 1975 classic 'Bohemian Rhapsody' currently standing at over 1.3 billion streams.
The most streamed song on Spotify is currently Ed Sheeran's 2017 single 'Shape Of You', which has over 2.6 billion streams. Hozier is the only Irish artist positioned in the Top 50 of the most streamed Spotify songs – with 1.2 billion streams for 'Take Me To Church'.
Recorded in May 1995, 'Wonderwall' – originally titled 'Wishing Stone' – describes "an imaginary friend who's gonna come and save you from yourself," according to Noel Gallagher. The music video for the track won British Video of the Year at the 1996 BRITs.
