Odetta Hartman returns with a new single from her upcoming album and the announcement of a performance in Workman’s Cellar, Dublin.
New York singer-songwriter Odetta Hartman has shared her new single 'Goldilocks' with a visual accompaniment directed by Bao Ngo. The new track comes as the latest to be lifted from Hartman's upcoming album Swansongs, out 22nd March via Transgressive Records.
Having been in the works for some time, Hartman discusses the new Grimes-inspired track, saying: "[It] first originated as a sassy banjo ditty, written backstage in-between sets in San Francisco. Its next phase jumped into an early 2000s rock vibe (å la The White Stripes)."
She continues: "In its final combined iteration—saturated with lyrical references to fairy tales and my favourite musical, Gypsy—it became a bombastic dance bop, a tongue-in-cheek pep talk, a vaudeville striptease, a whip cracking manifesto."
The accompanying video draws inspiration from the Wizard of Oz technicolour transition, opening to a black and white locale before saturating the screen with colour. The 'Goldilocks' singer reiterates the theatrical influence, Gypsy, stating: "The lyrics to the femme power anthem directly reference Gypsy so we wanted to bring some old school stage silliness into the visual accompaniment."
Following her debut mini-LP 222 and 2018’s Old Rockhounds Never Die, Odetta Hartman returns with Swansongs—a feverish dreamscape which includes the experimental pop anthem 'Goldilocks', the dramatic string-lead single 'Dr No' and her radical reimagining of the traditional 'Motherless Child' initially popularised by her namesake Odetta.

Constrained by the unique circumstances of modern isolation, Odetta and her co-producers—New York's Alex Friedman and Wyatt Bertz—production style was mitigated by the digital interface of remote collaboration. They cast the widest nets in spite of life's limitations and diligently discovered new creative possibilities in the production of Swansongs.
On the eve of the Swansongs official release, Odetta Hartman will perform Workman's Cellar in Dublin on 21st March, in support of Mutual Benefit. Tickets start from €23 plus booking fee and are available here.
