Electro-pop wizard Gavin MacDermott, aka Dashoda, on his stellar debut EP, Never Enough, and the “self-sabotage” in his music.
What was it like working on ‘Sultan' ft. Jackie Beverly?
It was my first artist-to-artist collaboration. I’ve had the chorus since I started writing it in 2018, but I could never really get anywhere with it. I tried several passes at the lyrics, but the chorus kind of stuck with me. I really loved putting ‘Sultan’ together, because I had Jackie in the studio. There was no pressure. It was just fun.
You began releasing music in 2019, so it’s taken a while for your debut EP Never Enough to arrive.
I was building up to more releases, but then Covid happened. If you were established and had a good following, there may have still been a demand for your release, but I was very new. The EP came about through a couple of remote collaborations – it was my main preoccupation during the pandemic.
Has your music has taken a different direction post-Covid?
Yes, this EP sounds quite shiny in comparison to what I’m currently working on. I spent more time than I normally would on YouTube, and became interested in things like vaporwave. We are living in the internet age and have this fetishisation of tape and analogue – my own production has gotten more lo-fi. There’s a bit of digital degradation going on now as well.
Is there a message behind your music?
The lyrics come from a place of self-sabotage, and being an avoidant person. It’s about attempting to deal with that. You’re trying to live out whatever story you think you have, whilst also overcoming self-esteem issues. It’s a battle within.
