Belfast electro duo Disfreq discuss their excellent mini-album Picture.
How much is the upcoming mini-album inspired by the Belfast club scene you both grew up in?
Belfast has an amazing club culture, the best on this island in our opinion. The music on the Picture series was inspired by our hometown of Moville in Donegal.
How has being brothers affected your working relationship?
Honestly, I don’t think it would work as well as it does if we weren’t brothers. Living under the same roof and being able to discuss every move we make, whether it be music or industry-related, is definitely a huge advantage. It’s a bit like having a gym partner to help motivate you – we motivate each other to go to the studio.
Was there a Picture track you found particularly challenging to create?

The aim of Picture was to showcase the diverse capabilities we have when creating music. With 10 years behind us, we felt it all boiled down to this album, to show everyone we can switch it up when needs be. Regarding a challenging track, I would say ‘Flame’ kicked up quite the fuss. It’s the only one that needed three or four attempts nail it.
You’ve experimented with different sub-genres of techno – where do you see your sound taking you beyond this album?
We used to create the artwork and everything ourselves, and use Distrokid to distribute our stuff to all of the platforms. It was during lockdown that we went through a phase of not sending music to labels, and just releasing when we felt like it – though they didn’t do very well. Our sound will always be evolving and we strive for originality at all costs.
