The Amniotics discuss their stellar new single ‘Boomerang’, and taking inspiration from Taylor Swift, Wet Leg and the riot grrl movement.
What was the inspiration for ‘Boomerang’?
Rebecca: I wrote it when we were starting out and I was noticing a lot of bullshit in the Dublin music scene. Everybody thinks the line “And his girlfriend goes to NCAD” is a dig at an ex-boyfriend. But it was more the fact that I was working with these male musicians who were always dating an incredibly talented girl from NCAD, who they completely overshadowed, and whose abilities they wouldn’t acknowledge.
You just have to deal with it. Like, you can talk shit about women, but we’ll give as good as we get.
How did you guys meet?
I saw Loeka, our drummer, play for an assessment and thought, ‘I wanna start a band with this girl.’ And when we got Cat and Katie, the band took off in a completely different direction.
Who’ve been your biggest influences?
Katie: We all found out the other day that Rebecca is the only Swiftie among us.
Rebecca: And they all found out which album they would be. Cat would be Red – she likes powerhouse songs that are really guitar-driven. Loeka would be 1989, cause she loves synths, complicated drums and great pop melodies. Katie would be Fearless, because her lyrics are gorgeous and sometimes a bit sad. And I would be Evermore. We’ve also been influenced by the riot grrl movement.

Katie: We’re really inspired too by Wet Leg’s punchy lyrics and drum-driven music.
Where would you like the rest of the year to take you?
Rebecca: As long as we’re still working on songs, I’ll be happy. I love gigging, but my favourite thing is when my bandmates show me a song and I can start working on it.
