Rising Dublin star Valerie Rose on her debut single, the stunning alt-pop effort ‘My Head’.
Why did you choose ‘My Head’ as your debut release?
It’s simple and catchy – it’s a little more pop than some of my other songs, but still in the same range and true to my style. I thought it would be a nice introduction.
You’re so young and blowing up in such a big way – how does it feel?
I’m super-excited, I have really supportive family and friends. Their backing gives me huge inspiration. It’s really nice to see something I’ve put a lot of effort into being well-received.
The themes in ‘My Head’ seem so mature – what inspired it?
Honestly, mumbling inspired the song. I mumbled a melody first and added in random words at the start. I liked the way certain words sounded and built the song from there. The song isn’t actually inspired by something that happened to me. A lot of my songs are personal, but this one is completely made up. Still, I think that every listener can find their own unique meaning from the song.
Which artists influence you?
When I write songs I never think about what I want to sound like, so it’s hard to know who or what influences me. I am quite a big fan of Conan Gray, I definitely love a lot of his songs. I really like beabadoobee’s vibe too, she’s really cool.
What sets you apart from other alt-pop singer-songwriters?
I’m still trying to figure that out. I’m a new artist and still developing. I think that my music is very authentic and represents me very well. I don’t try to sound like anyone, or anything, other than what I feel is right for me – maybe that’s what sets me apart. My music is genuine.
