Yes, you read that right: The Abbey Theatre is going to stage a new play colourfully entitled 'The Shitstorm'.
From the hilarious imagination of writer Simon Doyle (Offplan, Oedipus Loves You, Thwaite) and directed by Maeve Stone (Pan Pan Theatre Company, Abbey Theatre) comes the first ever co-production between the Abbey Theatre and Dublin Fringe Festival: 'The Shitstorm', which is a feminist comedy riff on Shakespeare’s 'The Tempest'.
In this new comedy based on The Tempest, Shakespeare’s characters find themselves in an entirely different context.
'The Shitstorm' is a modern mash-up with some fierce female music and a new girl at the microphone.
Miranda’s been stuck on the island with her dad Prospero for a while now and things have been pretty bad. His threats to give up his magic have always been hollow, until now. He’s run out on her and things have gotten a whole lot worse.
Ariel is out of a job, Caliban is dangerously bored, and Miranda is a teenage girl with no supervision. When the real storm hits she finally starts acting like one.
Taking to the Peacock Stage, 'The Shitstorm' features a live performance of original punk songs performed by the cast.
The cast includes Pom Boyd (Brokentalkers’ This Beach, Kathleen xx), Fionnuala Gygax (Stewart Parker Trust Award nominee 2016, HOSTEL 16, Pan Pan’s The Seagull and Other Birds, TG4’s Eipic), Ian Toner (Stewart Parker Trust Award nominee 2016, RTÉ’s Redwater, Rebellion, Charlie) and Bryan Quinn (The Rubberbandit’s Dad’s Best Friend, RTÉ’s Irish Pictorial Weekly).
It will be staged at the Peacock Stage at the Abbey from 8 – 16 September. Tickets cost
Tickets: €16 – €14 Conc. / Preview €11
