"I know he would be extremely happy and grateful to find himself where he deserves to be among such illustrious company," said McCartney.
Paul McCartney has written a letter asking the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to induct fellow Englishman Joe Cocker this year.
In the document, the former Beatle described Cocker as "a great man and a fine singer whose unique style made for some fantastic performances."
He also praised his "very imaginative" version of 'With a Little Help From My Friends,' a Beatles hit primarily written by McCartney. Cocker's soul cover rose to No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart, and catapulted him to fame.
This was not the first time McCartney praised the track. Shortly after the Sheffield-born rocker's passing in 2014, McCartney said the recording was "just mind blowing," adding Cocker had "totally turned the song into a soul anthem."
"All the people in the panel will be aware of the great contribution Joe made to the history of Rock and Roll," said McCartney in his letter's closing paragraph. "I know he would be extremely happy and grateful to find himself where he deserves to be among such illustrious company."

McCartney also advocated for Foreigner's induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year, who ended up being honoured alongside Dionne Warwick, Cher, Mary J. Blige, and Dave Matthews Band.
The 'Yesterday' writer was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a solo act in 1999, following the Beatles' induction in 1988, and John Lennon's in 1994. George Harrison's and Ringo Starr's would follow in 2004 and 2015, respectively.
Cocker received his first nomination this year, but has been eligible for the honour since 1994. Other first-time nominees of this edition include Outkast, Billy Idol, the Black Crowes, Chubby Checker, Maná, Phish, and Bad Company. Among the returning nominees are Mariah Carey, Oasis, the White Stripes, Cyndi Lauper, Joy Division/New Order, and Soundgarden.
The 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held in Los Angeles this autumn. The exact date is yet to be announced.
