One of the true jazz legends, tenor saxophone genius Pharaoh Sanders has been lined up for what promises to be a very special Dublin show, early in the new year.
In what will be a rare treat for jazz fans, The Pharaoh Sanders Quartet will appear at Tripod on Sunday February 3rd, in a fully seated show.
Originally from Little Rock in Arkansas, Sanders moved to New York in 1961 at the age of 21. He worked there with the legendary John Coltrane – on whose style he was very influential – and featured on nine albums, even though he was never officially a member of the band. Sanders is widely regarded among the finest and most influential tenor sax players of all time, having pioneered a passionate, intense style that often expressed itself in raw and untamed sheets of sound.
In the intervening years since Coltrane’s death in 1967, Sanders worked with many of the great jazz luminaries, including Sun Ra, Don Cherry, Carla Bley, Alice Coltrane, Larry Coryell, Gato Barbieri, Stanley Clarke and Sonny Sharrock – as well as rock and world music experimentalists, Jah Wobble and Bill Laswell.

Sanders has moved towards a more melodic and accessible approach, but without losing the intensity that made him such a force to be reckoned with.
Doors open at 7.30pm and tickets cost from €28 to 32.50 (inc. booking fee), from the usual outlets.
