It's full steam ahead for Day 3 in Stradbally – and our own energiser bunny has been up early, perusing the line-up for the cream of today's crop. Lana Del Rey, Wild Beasts and Nathaniel Rateliff feature, but it could be a late night...
Still with us? Good. Cos with two trail-blazing, eyebrow-raising, earthquaking and bootyshaking days under our belts, there's still plenty to get through on this glorious Sunday – and into Monday, too…
Dublin Gospel Choir on the Sabbath day is the Electric Picnic equivalent of going to mass, so beginning at the Main Stage at 1pm is pretty much a given. From there, though, there's an tour through some of the newest and brightest names of Irish music; Rankin's Wood at 14.30 for the loop-heavy stylings of Sample Answer, a man who looks deserving of a major breakthrough; the 17.10 Salty Dog Stage show of Áine Cahill, the soulful songstress currently standing right on the brink of the bigtime; and sandwiched in-between, the Stradbally bow of current Hot Press cover stars Picture This – who, we can all agree, have gone well and truly stratospheric.
If something of a more international bent is to your tastes, then Norwegian teen sensation AURORA (15.30, Electric Arena) is well worth an ear or two, while a chance to catch Local Natives giving their forthcoming album a run-out on the Main Stage at 16.00 looks very tasty indeed.
One for the can't-miss, must-see, get-there-or-die-trying list is Wild Beasts, who've already reserved a spot on end-of-year lists with their superlative long-player Boy King. Load up on your swagger pills and hit the Electric Arena at 18.15 for that one.
One of last year's cult heroes, R&B revivalist Nathaniel Rateliff brings his Night Sweats for a Main Stage session at 19.00, though a quick getaway to catch the awesome Wolf Alice in all their unabashed rock magnificent at 19.45 in the Electric Arena would not be frowned upon. In fact, some bi-location might well come in useful later, to save us tossing a coin between the irresistibly raw stylings of Margaret Glaspy (20.30, Other Voices) and the even rawer grungey glory of Bitch Falcon (9.00, Jerry Fish Electric Sideshow). Actually, we've also forgotten about fitting in a bite to eat – maybe we should pack a few energy gels before we hit the site this morning…
For we certainly don't want to be slowing down before the enigmatic Lana Del Rey closes the main stage show at 22.45; the Queen of Intrigue has played a few memorable Irish shows in the past, and tonight's promises to be just as special.
And for the brave and the faithful, nothing is impossible, which is why you have no choice but to fight through any pang of tiredness until 02.45, to catch what might be the ultimate example of keeping the best for last; exhilarating instrumentalists Overhead, The Albatross will rock the Body & Soul Main Stage to its very core to bring the festival to an almighty crescendo. Their Learning To Growl, unveiled earlier this year, underlined what most of us have known for years – that Ireland may never have produced a more exciting, talented and inspiring outfit.
Don't worry – we'll explain to your boss why you won't make it back for work in the morning…
