Jack Beausang of grunge-rockers Pinstripes on their new EP, Eerily Calm.
How was the band formed?
Me and Joe have been together from the start – we hadn’t really found anyone we blended with creatively until this summer. In June, we had a jam session with Nathan and it was like meeting your musical soulmate. We got three originals just in that one afternoon. We got Eve in about a month later – we auditioned a couple of singers and she was by far the best.
What’s it been like releasing Eerily Calm?
We had a demo that came out first, but that was kind of low quality. It was all recorded by ourselves in Nathan’s shed, so for this EP, we kind of wanted to take it a bit further. We wanted to get a higher quality, so it took about two months of work. Because we’re all quite new to it, the mastering and mixing process was the most labour intensive by far. It was a lot of moving around, but we’re very happy with the final product.
What’s your songwriting process like?
I write a lot of it on my own, with my acoustic in my room, and then bring it to Nathan and the band. He’ll try to get a structure, then Joe will come up with his part. Eve will try to make the vocal melody a bit more specific to her voice, and then it turns into a beautiful mixture of all of us.
How do you see the band evolving in the future?
We want to get in contact with a couple of labels, and keep doing the gigs and expand our fanbase. We want to try to get the resources to fulfil the aspirations we have with our songs, so that we can take them as far as they need to be taken. We want to fulfil artistically what the band stands for.
