Dublin-based The Crayon Set are releasing a double single as a taster from their forthcoming album.
The double A-side ‘Rock Star/Dream Girl’ and ‘Summer Song’ is set for release on tomorrow July 16th, ahead of their third album due for release later this year.
We here at Hot Press have an exclusive look at the videos for both, recorded live last month at the stunning Theatre Royal, Waterford. Check them out below.
Speaking about ‘Summer Song’, lead singer Robert Baker says the track was meant to be "a sort of bittersweet ode to bygone youth."
"Before proper jobs and responsibilities, when summers were an endless parade of parties and festivals, meeting people and dancing all night, and everything seemed to mean the world in the moment but forgotten the next day, a throwaway song for a throwaway time."
On 'Rock Star/Dream Girl', he said: "The song looks at the world of celebrity culture and fame-hunting. It’s nothing too serious - just a bit of harmless fun. The lyrics were appropriated from real quotes from minor celebs, so we may need a good - but cheap - legal team. It’s good fun to play live, we get to rock out a bit and to ironically fail at some rockstar posturing."

The Crayon Set released their eponymous debut album in 2013, recorded with Nick Brine (Teenage Fanclub, Super Furry Animals). It is filled choc-a-bloc with infectious, uptempo indie pop songs, described as “as catchy as a virus”. It’s follow-up Lost Languages was recorded with Gavin Glass (Lisa Hannigan, Villagers) and released in 2017 and featured Kate Dineen on guest vocals who later became a permanent member of the band. The album was in part a tribute to many of their favourite 'Americana' artists such as Tom Petty, R.E.M., Wilco & Neil Young.
Their new album Downer Disco was recorded with producer Stephen Shannon at Experimental Audio in Dublin in 2019. The release was put on hold due to Covid ’19, and is now due for release September 24th 2021.
