The song was mastered by Ciaran Byrne, and self-recorded in Hook’s home studio, as well as self-produced. Hook are Eoin O’Donnell (vocals, guitar), Morgan O’Brien (drums) Danny Spelman (bass, vocals).
Genre-bending new wave rockers Hook have given Hot Press the delightful opportunity to premiere their latest new single 'Best Days'.
An autobiographical account of being a young person in college, the lyrics for the track were started by drummer Morgan O'Brien, and chords and a melody were added by vocalist Eoin O'Donnell.
The Dubliners capitalised on their signature 80’s new wave rock sound for 'Best Days', with a simple guitar line and an active bass that pops out between chords. "For some, it's a very lonely and isolating time," O'Donnell says. "Everyone is telling you that these are the best days and years of your life, but more often than not it doesn't feel that way. There’s so many expectations to be social and interesting, but most people in fact have trouble making friends or feeling accepted.”
Hook wanted to capture a sense of nervousness and foreboding. Featuring harmonics, distorted sounds, panned elements, the band tried to represent what was going on in their narrator’s head.
