The Irish indie-pop musician returns with his first release in more of a year: get an exclusive first listen to the new track below.
Indie-pop artist Jack Dora presents a brand new single, a stylish cover of Bill Withers' 'Lovely Day'.
The Sligo-born musician's first release since last year's debut EP Take What You've Been Given, the cover is synth-fueled and breathes brand new life into the classic song. Where the original version was dripping with soul, Dora pairs a pounding drum machine with slick funk guitars and 80's synth strings and horns in his take. The effect is a brand new sound, undeniably Dora, that doesn't lose the vibrant spirit of the original.
Recorded and produced by Dora in his Dublin bedroom, the track separates itself even further via a tongue-in-cheek freestyle rap by roommate and collaborator MC Breeze. It was mixed by Jack Roulston and mastered by Fergal Davis, who has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry (Muse, Republic of Loose, Sinead O'Connor).
In his own words, “I’ve always wanted to do a cover of ‘Lovely Day’ in my own style and recording covers is one of my favourite ways of learning about production and testing myself. The joy of this is that it’s supposed to remove any pretentiousness about how I should release music. It was purely an exercise in fun and complete silliness. Myself and my housemate, who’s actually a doctor, sat down one evening, had a few beers and wrote some new lyrics and created this persona of MC Breeze and just had an absolute ball.”
