Indie-pop artist Jack Dora has just dropped ‘Rat In My Room’, his first original track since his debut EP Take What You’ve Been Given in 2022, and it’s infectious.
An ‘80s synth, grimy club tune, the song tackles Jack’s personal struggle after relocating to London post pandemic. His angsty, grumbly vocals build into near shouting over the fast-paced electronic track, as though no one gets the severity of the rat situation but himself.
Having been featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday UK playlist, across English and Irish national radio and listed on Hot Press magazines Hot for 2022 list, the Sligo native has been deemed “one of the most compelling new forces in Irish music” by Hot Press, and this new track is proof that we still stand by that statement.
“‘Rat In My Room’ was my way of dealing with and examining a pretty dark time,” the indie artist said. “I personified myself as this rat in a suit, scurrying around London. Dressed up snazzy as if I was hiding what was going on under the suit. It’s all about the area I live in and how the chaos reflected what I was dealing with at the time.”
Following his critically acclaimed EP Take What You’ve Been Given, Jack leans further into the dark side of electronic music, combining arpeggiated synths, angular guitar riffs and industrial drum sounds with intense declarations of “there’s a rat in my room / and I don’t know what to do”. The post punk track was produced and recorded by Jack himself, capturing the severity of his experience as he embraces a new dynamic, uptempo electronic sound.
