Following the premiere of the video for 'Original Bad Boy Material' on Hot Press earlier this year, Steo Wall is back. His new single, 'My People', finds the Dublin singer-songwriter celebrating the unique culture of Irish Travellers – with shout-outs to the legendary likes of the Pecker Dunne, John Reilly and Margaret Barry.
"'My People is a genuine folk song paying homage to all that have gone before me," he says of the release. "These are a small few of the people who, not only carried the flame for Travelling people, but also Irish folk music and culture. They inspired generations after them, me included. I don't know if it comes across on the track, but my voice was trembling with emotion while recording this song. It genuinely felt like I was standing on the shoulders of giants."
The new single arrives two years after the release of Where I'm From – which was described by Hot Press' Edwin McFee as "excellent stuff".
"Declared 'the real article' by Damien Dempsey, the music on Wall's debut sounds focused and fully-formed and boasts a strong foundation - thanks, in part, to mentor Luka Bloom," McFee wrote. "Buoyed by appearances from those aforementioned Irish legends (as well as David Spillane and more), the 11-track album is brimming with confessional lyrics and a cornucopia of musical styles. It surely signals the start of an exciting career."
'My People' further establishes Steo as one of the country's most thrilling talents – expanding his unique folk-influenced sound, dubbed "Irish soul music" by Damien Dempsey.
