Following the release of We Are Aerials' latest album, Every Architect of Ruin, earlier this year, the collective have shared a remarkable new video for one of the LP's standout tracks, 'Echo'.
Conor McAteer – the mastermind behind the We Are Aerials project – wrote the track on Red, a Mexican Fender Telecaster that he found his in the attic of his home, two years after moving in.
"The song began as an exercise in forming less familiar chord shapes on the guitar and it morphed into this 6 ½ minute thing in two parts," he says of 'Echo'. "The lyrics in Part 1 are about anxiety. Part 2 was meant to be instrumental but once we recorded it, the idea changed, and I imagined someone speaking about their own fears, anxieties, and loneliness.
"I knew the voice wasn’t mine, so I scoured the net for samples. I ended up coming across this wonderful monologue on the website of an art project called London is Lonely. The woman, Yasmin, spoke so candidly about her struggles. I’m so privileged, and so grateful to London is Lonely for granting me permission to use it."
The video for 'Echo' was shot and directed by Paul Casey, who also recorded the album alongside Conor.
