All-female rockers McQueen play frazzled punk-pop. Just don't call them girlies.
Thinking about it, it’s been a while since there were any all-girl rock bands ready to bring the world to its knees. Enter McQueen, a Brighton-based foursome currently causing a storm in moshpit circles with ‘Running Out Of Things To Say’, a high-energy anthem that fans of Hole, L7 and the wonderfully monickered Tampasm will appreciate.
Yet despite these ground-breaking acts, the heavier end of the musical spectrum is still very much male-dominated.
“People have lower expectations,” says guitarist Cat de Casanove, speaking from their rehearsal room. “They generally think girls can’t rock as hard as boys, which we’re trying to prove isn’t true.”
Having supported bands as diverse as Mad Capsule Markets, Cheap Trick and Juliette & The Licks, McQueen have certainly proved their live worth.
Yet on plastic, they’ve only one single to their name and are currently in the process of recording their debut album. Surely this must put them under immense pressure?
“The pressure would be there anyway, especially with the standard of what’s coming out thse days,” reasons Leah. “We don’t want to release any old shit. We want it to be great from start to finish.”
A fomer resident of Dublin, she’s excited to wrap up the record and play on these shores.
“I fucking love Dublin," she enthuses, "so I can't wait to come over and do some shows. I know the Irish love a good time, and that’s what McQueen’s about.”
