He was one of the architects of the Chicago punk sound, and a founder of Black Box Studios in France.
Hot Press is sad to learn of the death of Iain Burgess, one of the three house producers based at Black Box Studio in Noyant La Gravoyere, France.
Burgess passed away last Thursday as a result of complications arising from pancreatic and liver cancer.
Black Box has become synonymous with numerous Irish acts who’ve recorded there including Amazing Pilots, David Kitt, Gemma Hayes, Johnny Cronin, Luka Bloom, Mundy, Mark Geary, Nina Hynes, Redneck Manifesto, The Rags and The Walls.
It’s also hosted international artists of the calibre of The Last Shadow Puppets, The Kills and dues.
Burgess, who worked alongside Peter Deimel and former Frames man David Odlum at Black Box, was a graduate of the ‘80s Chicago punk scene with Big Black, Ministry and Naked Raygun among the legendary outfits he worked with.
He set Black Box up in 1993 with Peter Deimel and was spoken of fondly by all who recorded there.
One of the first to react to the tragic news was Jape’s Richie Egan who describes him simply as “an amazing man.”
Also paying his respects is Steve Albini who says: "Iain was a dear friend and mentor, and I consider him responsible for a good many of the best things that have ever happened to me. As is the case when someone important dies, I find it hard to imagine the world without him. Black Box survives as a testament and monument to Iain's imagination and perseverance. It's in the running for the best place on earth to make a record."
