Puppy Love Bomb: “Booby Milk EP” (Rough Trade)
Green Day: “Welcome To Paradise”(Reprise)
Fresh from touring with Sugar, Puppy Love Bomb climb another rung in the ladder to stardom with a quality release. ‘Blind’, undoubtedly the standout track, is one of their finest songs to date. The frenzied guitars whip up an invigorating head of steam as the song almost explodes into action. The band is now more tightly knit as a unit and because of this the bass and drums sit more neatly together. Yet the EP as a whole is marred by the lack of variation. As the band continue to mature the breadth will hopefully come, but until then they remain merely good, nowhere close to great.

Green Day share many of Puppy Love Bomb’s strengths (they produce catchy three minute pop songs) and weaknesses (they desperately need a more wide ranging sound). However their dependence on simple three-chord tunes is so total that the band struggle to produce something you haven’t heard before. ‘Welcome To Paradise’ is one of their better efforts and while the album becomes tiresome, this lasts just long enough to be an enjoyable experience.
