Purity Ring - Another Eternity
Not quite there synth-pop from Canadian duo
Canadian duo Megan James and Corin Roddick first came to our attention back in 2012 with the sophisticated synth-pop of their debut album, Shrines. They were soon assigned to the bewildering genre called ‘chillwave’. A few years and a high profile Lady Gaga remix later, and they’re back and trying harder than ever to infiltrate the mainstream. Perhaps they try far too hard.
Purity Ring flit between icy electro and formulaic, autotuned pop, without definitively embracing either. New single ‘Bodyache’ is the sort of offering you’d expect from Ellie Goulding, only lacking her pop prowess. Purity Ring are simply too sweet to be hip, but too self-consciously hip to be pop. Overall, Another Eternity lacks the sparkle that made Purity Ring stand out in the first place.
Key Track - 'Stranger than Earth'
