The man who wrote Streets of London joins The Waterboys, Rufus Wainwright and Jools Holland on a star-studded line-up
Ralph McTell has joined the line-up for Sligo Live 2015. The legendary folk singer will play the Hawks Well Theatre on Saturday, 24 October, as part of the increasingly successful and prestigious north western shindig.
One of the great folk storytellers, McTell is now celebrating almost 50 years on the road. Known for his virtuoso guitar style, he is a prolific and gifted songwriter. A native of London, he is, of course, best known for the marvellously empathetic 'Streets of London', which has been covered by over two hundred artists. The song earned him an Ivor Novello Award in 1974. His tale of Irish emigration, 'From Clare to Here’, is hugely popular in Ireland.
He made his recording debut in 1968 with the album Eight Frames a Second. In 2002 he was presented with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. In all, including ‘Best Of’s, he has released 46 albums in a stellar career. Earlier this year, he was one of the guests at a party held by President Michael D. Higgins in Áras an Uachtaráin, to mark Bloomsday.
