Reality TV
Skinful's album has some genuinely beautiful moments, but could also use a little extra oomph at times.
Dublin-based band Skinful are Aussies who consider Ireland their home.
'Finding Myself', originally released as a single, makes a strong opener to the album, singer Megan Albany's voice complimented by acoustic guitars and easy listening textures - a combination that would sound good on Friday afternoon drive-time radio.
'The Other Half' which again places the emphasis on acoustic guitar and vocals, similarly stands out as one of the stronger tracks: the guitar hook is genuinely beautiful. As these highlights confirm, Skinful are capable of producing great tunes.
However Reality TV is not without its flaws. On occasion it sounds far too much like Morcheeba or late '90s Moloko, for my taste. On tracks like 'Looking Good' and 'Control Freak', they settle for bland pop in places where punchier guitars and less generic beats could have given the songs that extra oomph.
