Ani di Franco has never been stuck for words, for passions, or for ideals, and Revelling Reckoning snapshots her world - just for now. Because, like all full-blooded artists, her stance is likely to shift, her mind to expand.

This is a double album that'll suit your mood, whether celebratory or reflective. As the twinned title suggests, the first collection of 13 songs revels in the joys and schizoid shifts of relationships, personal and political. The second collection is far more contemplative, reflecting (mostly) the penumbral cast of relationships, both personal and political.
Jazz inflections peep through funky rhythms and folkie melody lines. And still, she stretches and bends her own limits at every hairpin turn. 'So What' is a bare-knuckled shoulder-shrug that cannot shake off the weight of its worries, a weight that still somehow manages to float on top of some sublime horn arrangements and fluid cotton wool percussion.
'Grey' is gorgeously plodding, in no hurry to go anywhere 'cept deep into the vein. Di Franco's perceptions sear and ache, needling at every wisp of emotion, never satisfied until the essence is exposed.

The flip side, Revelling, is raw funk from the get-go. 'O.K' and 'Harvest' are powerhouses of that trademark di Franco spunk; 'Fierce Flawless' is vintage gobby Ani, as articulate as ever.
For sheer musical sophistication, Ani di Franco is the Coco Chanel of the music industry. For flaming passion, she's the Woody Guthrie of the 21st century. And for downright chutzpah, she's Woody Allen, minus the trumpet, but with rhythm guitar instead.
Ms. Di Franco's right on track. All 29 of them.
