90's shoegaze pioneers return to the scene with 80's-inspired single 'Peace Sign' and the announcement of their upcoming album.
Iconic 90’s shoegaze band Ride has announced their newest album, Interplay, streaming on 29th March, alongside its first single release ‘Peace Sign’ out now via Wichita Recordings / PIAS.
As the third record since the group’s return in 2014, Interplay brings the hypnotic groove and dreamy melodies of the band’s early works into a modern soundscape, finding inspiration in 80’s pop legends Tears For Years, Talk Talk, and U2. The album is imbued with a sense of resilience, born out of the group’s journey from their 1996 breakup to today’s resurgence as they head toward their second peak.
‘Peace Sign’ acts as the perfect introduction to Interplay, featuring 80’s-inspired synths, sailing melodies and a driving bass-line as shoegaze quickly becomes one of music’s fastest growing genres, surging among Gen-Z artists and fans alike.
“‘Peace Sign’ started life as a jam recorded at Marks’ OX4 studio, in early 2021,” says guitarist and vocalist Andy Bell, “We called it ‘Berlin’ and initially it featured Loz on drums, Steve on bass and myself on a prophet 5 synth. About six months later I got hold of the recording and wrestled it into song form. Lyrically I was inspired by a film called ‘The Alpinist’ about the visionary free climber Marc-André Leclerc. Soon after I’d finished working on the song I remember I was raving to my bandmates about Leclerc at OX4, and a good memory of that time was us all watching that film at Mark’s studio.”
