A new movie to keep an eye out for is The Secret of Marrowbone, a terrifying horror out July 13. The main reason to see it is star George MacKay’s exciting, live wire performance as Jack, a young orphan man in 1969 forced to protect his siblings from malevolent forces both human and supernatural.

The actor spoke to Roe McDermott about preparing for the role and his amazing career so far, which has seen him act alongside Saoirse Ronan (How I Live Now), Clive Owen (The Boys are Back), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and most important to MacKay, Daniel Craig (Defiance).

“You do learn by osmosis, and in a way, wonderfully taking it for granted. But with Daniel Craig, there was definitely a sense of ‘Oh my God, that’s James Bond!’”

He also talks with Roe about how he gets into the mindset of playing such intelligent but damaged characters like Jack in Marrowbone.

“I like to do a lot of preparation. It can be based in figuring out a character’s past and why they think like they do. It’s psychology. It’s working out the nuts and bolts of those internal processes and how conscious they are.”

Believe me, for the terror MacKay’s Jack endures in Marrowbone, this type of preparation must have been vital.
