RTÉ broadcast nine out of the Top 10 most popular television programmes watched by the Irish public in 2005.
Clare Duignan, Director of Television Programmes, RTÉ, said: "Irish viewers have once again demonstrated their preference for quality home-produced programming to which they can relate. This continues an established trend over the past number of years.
"In 2006, we will deliver even more home-grown programming which our audience has a proven appetite for and to which we are absolutely committed."
The Late Late Toy Show on Friday 2 December was the number one programme of 2005 with over 1.1 million people tuning in.
You're A Star Live, the final show of the series which announced the winner of the competition, came in at number 2 with an average audience of 916,000.
While RTÉ entertainment programmes dominated the Top 10, RTÉ Sports programmes continued to attract significant audiences. The All-Ireland Football Final - Kerry v Tyrone - came in at number 4 with an audience of 887,000, while the Republic of Ireland v Switzerland World Cup Qualifier came in at number 8 with an audience of 769,000.
The most watched RTÉ News bulletin was the RTÉ News: Nine O'Clock on Monday 17 January when 800,000 tuned in to hear of the latest developments in the Robert Holohan case. This was the seventh most popular programme of the year.
