The video, directed by Grant Singer, accompanies Smith’s new single released today, ‘How Do You Sleep.’ In the first six hours, it gained over 1.5 million views.
Four-time Grammy winning singer Sam Smith has released his latest single, ‘How Do You Sleep,’ following much social media hype. Smith last toured in Ireland with back-to-back shows at 3Arena last March.
In the opening shot of the music video, a deadweight Smith is being dragged from a photo set over dream-like electronic synths. He eventually jolts to life as he sings, “I’m done hating myself for feeling / I’m done crying myself awake / I’ve gotta leave and start the healing.”
“I'm so proud of this one. Thank you to all the beautiful humans who've helped me really come out my shell over the past year," tweeted Smith. "I hope you all enjoy this & please learn the moves so we can dance together soon x,” he said in a nod to choreographer Parris Goebel's brilliant work.
HOW DO YOU SLEEP? My heart is beating so fast. I'm so proud of this one. Thank you to all the beautiful humans who've helped me really come out my shell over the past year. I hope you all enjoy this & please learn the moves so we can dance together soon x https://t.co/HpvK3IPeYQ — samsmith (@samsmith) July 19, 2019
Sam Smith has been open about his sexuality for most of his life, but recently spoke about his gender identity.
“When I saw the word non-binary genderqueer and I read into it and I heard these people speaking, I was like ‘fuck that is me,’” explained Smith in an interview with Jameela Jamil in March. “I’m not male or female. I float somewhere in between.”

The video is being hailed as an emblem of the LGBTQ+ community with numerous people tweeting their praise for the representation of the video.
“Seeing art like @samsmith’s fantastically gay video to #HowDoYouSleep really inspires me,” Comedian and writer Dewayne Perkins tweeted.
