ScHoolBoy Q demonstrates why he’s being hailed as hip hop’s next big breakthrough artist on May 27 when he plays Vicar St., Dublin. Tickets priced €26 go on sale on Monday February 3.
Better known to the IRS as Quincy Matthew Hanley, the South Central rapper earned a huge underground following with his DIY Setbacks and Habits & Contradictions mixtapes.
Championed by the likes of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, it wasn’t long before he inked a major deal with Interscope, which bears fruit on February 25 with the release of Oxymoron.
His first album proper, it features guest appearances from fellow Black Hippy collective members Kendrick Lamar and Ab-Soul, Raekwon, Tyler the Creator and 2 Chainz.
Needless to say there’s a back story, with Q dealing Oxycontin for the 52 Hoover Crips before starting to rhyme later in his teens.
Taking care of special guest duties is Isaiah Rashad, another hotshot newcomer whose Cilvia Demo EP has just hit iTunes.
