ONE OF ROCK’S GREAT ENIGMAS IS BACK
When The Walker Brothers played the old Adelphi Cinema on Dublin’s Middle Abbey Street on October 20, 1966 with The Troggs, a car containing the young Scott Walker was overturned by rabid fans. Back then, The Walkers were as big as The Beatles. In a subsequent documentary, Scott revealed that this frightening incident played a major part in his decision to shun the spotlight.
Scott Walker is often cited as one of music’s great recluses who composes some of the most extreme and challenging music on the planet. A collaboration with Seattle experimental drone metal band Sunn O))) is his latest adventure. It will confuse and confound – but ultimately thrill and inspire.
The five tracks on Soused weigh in at forty-nine minutes. Opener ‘Brando’ immediately throws the listener with Walker’s unique falsetto and blasts of droney noise. By the time you get to ‘Bull’, you’ll be bewildered, in a beautiful way. There are rumours doing the rounds that Scott is set to do a Kate Bush and perform for the first time since 1978 in support of this stunning album. We’re crossing our fingers and toes...
