This third volume in a series of multi-artist homages to über-folkie Pete Seeger differs from its predecessors in that it includes new work by the man himself.
This third volume in a series of multi-artist homages to über-folkie Pete Seeger differs from its predecessors in that it includes new work by the man himself. Disc One of this double-CD set features a number of songs never previously recorded, performed both solo and with friends like Ani DiFranco, Steve Earle and Arlo Guthrie. At 84, Seeger’s social conscience is as strong as ever, though, and so is his ability to pen an incisive lyric. Not surprisingly, the war in Iraq takes centre stage here, but there’s also a powerful tribute to the martyred Chilean songwriter Victor Jara and a newly-composed ballad in honour of Martin Luther King. The second disc contains covers of Seeger’s songs by Janis Ian, Natalie Merchant, Dick Gaughan and others, plus spoken-word tracks by Seeger himself.
