The film's title is taken from Sheila E.'s 2016 single, written as a tribute to Prince, following his death earlier that year.
"My way of expressing myself is to go into the studio and just let things happen," she told Billboard at the time of the release. "So I started writing... [The song] was based on [Prince] and I meeting each other and I was a girl and he was a boy, 'cause it was 1978, a very long time ago. So that whole process and how he had left... It was devastating."

Following the release of her debut album, The Glamorous Life, in 1984, Sheila E. toured as the opening act for Prince's Purple Rain Tour – during which time the pair reportedly began a romantic relationship. She went on to join Prince's band as drummer and musical director from 1987 to 1989. After leaving the band, she and Prince remained friends and occasional collaborators over the years.
Following the release of 'Girl Meets Boy' in 2o16, Sheila paid tribute to Prince once again in 2020, with 'Lemon Cake'.
"One day I mentioned to [Prince] that I make a good chocolate and lemon cake," she told Billboard. "His response was, 'Oh, I didn't know you cooked.' I said, 'Of course I do. My mom being Creole and my dad Mexican, I better know how to cook.' The next day I baked a lemon cake. It was love at first sight and one of his favourite things that we would share in the studio."
