YOUNG AND CLUBBED College is back – and promoters are laying on a raft of student-friendly clubbing nights.
Something wicked this way comes. Yes, students are on their way back to college. And promoters are getting ready to cater for a fresh influx of party-loving college goers. One student night that has been a success these past few years is Trashed at Andrew’s Lane, Dublin every Tuesday night. Featuring a mix of indie and electronica, the event celebrates its fifth anniversary on September 29 with special guest The Toxic Avenger, aka Simon Delacroix from Paris.
Meanwhile, Waterford’s Republik has a few gems in store, with a Freerange Records night on September 26 featuring Jimpster. And on October 10, Glasgow’s Slam will be squeezing into the club’s The Loft headquarters.
A late entry to the festival calendar is the Yes Festival at Dublin’s Eastpoint Business Park. Some 25 DJs from around the country will perform across three stages, from September 26.
Headliners include: Al Keegan (Mixed Salad / Rubberband / Aciitone), Lil Dave Redmond and Al Kennington (Nightflight / Airbound / Hang Tough). The event is reasonably cheap, with just a e20 cover charge.
One of our favourite producers at the moment is Cork’s Mark O Sullivan. His album Fragments from a Long Country is going down a storm and is highly recommended.
Currently based in Berlin, Dubliner DJ Wool – aka Glen Brady – is about to embark on a run of 25 shows around Europe and the US. Glen is also about to release a new single, ‘Strobelight’. It will feature remixes from Fantastadon, Arveene and Misk, Royal Rumble and Computer Love. The track is being put out by LA-based Little Owl.
Brady also records as The Glass, and has a new single in that guise on the way entitled ‘SuperHero’. Remixes will be by Luke Solomon, and Ursula 1000, Bit Thief and Sam Rockwell.
Another club celebrating an anniversary is 110th Street at Galway, on the go 11 years in November. And The Bernard Shaw is three years young on September 27. Watch this space – rumour has it a special guest will be jetting in to celebrate the event.
The Choice Cuts crew have a fantastic selection of gigs on the way. The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble will be rocking Galway, Cork Dublin and Limerick from October and Paris rapper ONRA will hit Twisted Pepper, Dublin on September 18. Olan from All City Records in Support.
Derrick May is on a mission to save the world from bad music. He plays at Hype, POD, Dublin October 16.
