Buncrana’s rising slowcore sensation, sign crushes motorist has announced his biggest headline show to date. The artist, aka 19 year-old Liam McKay, will play Whelan’s Main Venue on Friday, 10th May.
sign crushes motorist is McCay’s main project - amongst many other - which has amassed over 4.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Slowcore is willfully lo-fi, muffled and evocative and the music of sign crushes motorist epitomises the genre through songs like ‘Better’ and ‘Love Me.’
The Buncrana musician skyrocketed to viral streaming success for his infectious, enthralling soundscapes which pedal a similar velveteen softness to Duster or Galaxie 500. But it is the artist's indigo-soaked, minimalist arrangements and deeply personal lyricism which set him apart from his slowcore peers.
In an interview with Hot Press in February, McKay discussed his artistic approach with Jess Murray, saying: “I’m just making music that I can relate to, and I feel like other people can as well. I don’t do anything crazy poetic in my songwriting, but I think some people like that.”
