Indie-folk act Silver Branch, a.k.a Kieran Mulvihill, discusses the inspiration behind his name, sound and latest single.
What inspired the moniker Silver Branch?
I was getting into a philosopher from Kerry called John Moriarty at the time I was looking for a name. I opened up one of his books, and I found this line, and it said ‘The music of the Silver Branch.’ It was a term used in Irish mythology, meaning ‘gateway to another world,’ so I thought that was really interesting. There’s also a bit of a nod to a band I really like called Silver Jews.
What inspired your latest single ‘The Setting Sun’?
It’s a slice of life really, living in Dublin and trying to find your way in and out of relationships, good and bad, and working to make ends meet. I work as a nurse as well, part time, so I have to do 12-hour shifts. It’s just trying to stay positive and have a music career amidst all the other things you have to do. And it’s about chances coming when you least expect them.
You’ve recently been recording with Karl Odlum. What is it like working with him?
I can really relax with Karl, we get on like a house on fire. I did my last EP with him under my own name, From The Outside Looking In in 2017, and I really enjoyed the process. It’s all in his home, so it’s more like drinking tea and relaxing and then going, ‘Oh, we’ll play a song now.’ There’s no big pressure.
What do you have in store for the rest of 2024?
I have an album coming out in May. The whole thing is done basically, so it’s gonna come out under A For Effort Records.
